In lieu of Edinburgh Castle

Salisbury Court, Edinburgh, Scotland
Our day started off well enough - the usual routine.   Marilynn's alarm rang at 7:30 am, showered, ate breakfast, got ready for day of touristing.  We set off walking to locate the spot where our tour was supposed to meet tomorrow.  We walked down toward the city center and found Rabbie's where Prince St turned into something else, then we walked back up to High Street toward Edinburgh Castle.
That was the first of things to go wrong.  The castle was fully booked for today.  Then we went to Mary King's Close - an historic site that comprised an old and very narrow street (named after a prominent businesswoman) and the cluster of habitations built next to it from the bottom level which was for the poorest of the poor, to a middle level and than a higher level with richer furniture and larger spaces.  The bottom room served 12-14 people with no windows, a dirt floor, straw to sleep on and a bucket for waste that was then sloshed into the street when full.  The youngest inhabitatant had that job.  There were rats that led to the plague and we learned about two types - the black plague with the red spots of hemorraging and the bubonic with the huge boils that were cut, dowsed with vinegar and salt and then cauterized, all without anesthetic.  I can't remember the wealthier residents so well - maybe the photos will help.  But we did not enter the Close at this point because after Marilynn paid for her ticket, a fire alarm started blaring and we were all evacuated onto the sidewalk.  It lasted quite a while so we moved on.   I had said I was hungry so we stopped at a coffee shop restaurant named Coppersmith.  It looked very nice so we walked in and took one of the two tables next to the window.  Otherwise it looked pretty full.  We waited for someone to take our order.  Finally, Marilynn snagged a waiter and he took our order.  A couple came in and took the other table for two and their friends took the table next to them.  There wasn't much movement on the other tables, but Marilynn had looked at the barista and she was busy all the time.  We watched as the other two tables were given napkins and silverware.  Marilynn then told a waitress that we had been waiting a long time and that the other people came after us.  The waiter came back and apolgogized and said he would put in our order for priority and asked us to repeat what it was.  We continued waiting.  We had only about 45 mins. now before we had to go for our tour at Gladstone Land.  We waited.  Now we saw that the other people were being served.  We spoke to the waiter again and he apolgogized and took full responsibility and said he would prioritze our order....and what was it, again???  We gave our orders for the third time.  Then Marilynn said that she felt like leaving.  By this time, I had changed my order from avocado eggs benedict to scone with jam and cream, like what Marilynn ordered, because I wouldn't have had time to eat the eggs since we had less than 15 min left by this time.  We left.
  1. Gladstone Land was a property owned by a widow and her daughter and then later by Gladstone.  I don't remember now who was the haberdasher - I think it was the woman - a shrewd businesswoman as well.  This house was quite a bit more fashionable.  It was lived in until 1930.  At one point it had been condemned as Old Edinburgh was supplanted by New Edinburgh on the outskirts.
  2. I have to admit that I have been in awe of all the magnificent buildings in Edinburgh.  Old stone buildings.  With chimney pots.  I should say more about them because I am am obsessed by them.
  3. After this we went to Gilles Cathedral which was founded in 1000 something and burned down twice and rebuilt.  It went from very ornate Catholic to more somber Presbyterian after the Reformation, but then at some point the Prevost decided it needed to be spruced up and it was gussied up once more.  It has a lot of chapels including the famous Thistle Chapel for the Knights of the Thistle,, chapels that were dedicated to guilds and prominent families.  There is a newish organ that is supposed to be one of the best in the world.   There are fantastic stained glass windows, several dedicated to some of the few saints in Scotland.  We had a guided tour with a guide who was very good.  Before she started there was a cello concert where the cellist played a number of Beatles songs including "Imagine" I thought,  but Marilynn said she is very familiar with it and did not recognize it.  The concert ran late so the tour started late.
  4. When the tour finished, it was around four.  We considered options.  I was for eating sooner than later since we had missed lunch except for going to Cafe Nero and getting a muffin and coffee after we left Coppersmith.  We started walking back to the apartment and found a Chinese restaurant that was very good.  I had shrimp and Marilynn had a chicken dish.  She had enough for another meal.  We stopped in several stores on the way back to get some supplies - laundry detergent, shampoo for me, tea for Marilynn, and then food for me twhile Marilynn had her leftover Chinese dinner.
  5. When we got back to the apartment, we organized ourselves for the laundry experience which turned out to be an ordeal.   We had our clothes int the washers but needed to download an app to pay for the machines.  Since I had my phone with me, I was the one to get the app, but it took a long time.  Marilynn got the app downloaded for me and worked it until it asked for the payment and then she sent me to the desk for help.  They downloaded the app, got me to a different payment page, I entered my name, email, and it balked at my email, I tried several times, but it cut off the tops of the letters and I couldn't tell if I had made a typo becuase they looked the same to me.  The desk person redid it and it worked and then on to the password.  I put in one but it did not meet the criteria, I added a capital and a symbol and tried again and it was still telling me that it didn't work.  I erased them and tried several more times and then gave it to the desk cler - now a new person - who changed one symbol to another and it worked.  I went back to the laundry - by then Marilynn had gotten us tickets for the Castle on monday and checked our route by bus to meet the Rabbiels tour.  I followed the app with Marilynn's help, put in the payent amount and my card info and our washing machines started.  After about a half hour, we were done, folded our clothes, came back upstairs - 2 flights of stairs - Marilynn said we did 14 flights over the course of the day - and we hung our clothes as best we could on the shelves and other places in the room.  I took a photo for Kara.
  6. Marilynn poured us our wine, I uploaded photos and now I am finished with today's blog.  Marilynn is already asleep I think.
