Shaba National Reserve, Kenya
Thursday 8th September 2016: Game drive at 7.30, Steve has decided to do a double one this morning and then we can have the whole afternoon to ourselves to enjoy the Lodge, swim etc. Out that rough road again and across the highway to the Samburu Reserve. The river is completely dry in Jan/Feb and the elephants dig down for moisture, the other animals wait for this to happen. We see our first 'kill', but it's not what we had expected. A Buzz Hawk swoops a snake and we watch as he struggles to kill it before flying off with it. We are also lucky to see a male ostrich come prancing down in front of us, wings extended and flapping and do the mating dance which attracts a female and they aren't shy about what they do. The call comes that a cheetah has been spotted, but with all vehicles looking he still manages to remain elusive. I will just put names on the photos for you to see what we saw.

We are lead into dinner by warriors with flame sticks - dinner is set up out under the trees with coloured lights, and the works for a full buffet dinner. The warriors are from the Samburu tribe and the leader relates their cultural practices to us - they are almost identical to the Maasai tribe, just a few differences. The group then perform dances for us - most of it is springing off the ground on the spot - would make good ruckmen or basketball players. Dinner is accompanied by a guy on a guitar singing songs we all knew.

Sad to hear the Eagles have lost and that's the end of the season for them.
