Lions at it again

Narok, Kenya
Tuesday 13th September 2016: Early morning game drive, leaving at 6.30 after coffee, the sunrise is stunning. John's back is playing up, so he stays home this morning. We can add a couple of new things to our usual zebra, buffalo, giraffe, Impala : Topi's which have a black patch on their rump which looks like it has been painted on and Hartebeast. We spot 2 lions and Impala and Topi standing like statues and looking in the direction of the lions, so are hoping to see them attack, but his prey runs off and he disappears in bushes. As we speed to another sighting, we go past a male ostrich doing its mating dance, but we don't have time to stop - male lions have killed a buffalo overnight, but by the time we get there they have stopped feeding, however we still get shots of them. We are 6 km's from the Tanzania border here.
Back to the Lodge for a late breakfast and then I go to one of the options - a cooking class. First of all the head gardener, Eric, takes us into their organic garden and explains their methods of pest control, fertiliser etc. and then we are dressed to look like chefs. We assist Bernard and Naomi cook fish, chicken, a tomato sauce, kale and that white stuff we had before made of ½ maize flour and ½ water. It is a fun experience and most of it tasted OK - not sure I will be cooking it at home.

John piked out of this and the walk, but came on the evening game drive. This time we were fortunate to see a black Rhino for the first time - they are less common than the white and are usually in amongst the trees as this is what they eat with their different shaped mouth - the White have a shovel like mouth that they scrape along the ground almost. Despite the names, they are both grey in colour. We then see a male lion with a mane eating under a tree and another sitting out in the open some distance away. They tell us they call this the 'Lion Park' and it is proving so.

We have a special dinner tonight set out around the swimming pool - champagne and orange juice was supplied by Southern Cross an affiliate of Scenic as an apology for the inconvenience of the land cruiser breaking down and a wait at the gate for the flamingos. It is a still, warm evening and we end with a couple of appropriate speeches - well done Peter when put on the spot to stand up and talk. Tomorrow morning is 4.45 coffee 5pm departure for another highlight of the trip.
