The famous Nasca line

Nasca, Peru
This morning we made our way to the local airstrip where we took a 4 seater plane over the plains between the mountains where there are lines and figures carved into the ground. These were apparently made by the Incas pre 1530 but they are so large that they can really only be appreciated from the air. There is still a lot of speculation about why they were done. The most plausible explanation (in my opinion) is the lines were to mark the most possible places to find water. This plateau does not get any rain. They say the last time it rained here was during the last Ice Age. The water they get is the run off from the higher Andes Mountains. However or why they were made, in any case it was pretty amazing.
After landing, we made our way to the Chinchilla cemetary. They have discovered about 400 graves and have restored 13 of them. There are perfectly preserved mummies everywhere. And there are bones all over the place so Andrew and I played name that bone as we walked around. Leave it to some medical people to find the humour and education in it.
We caught the bus from Nasca to Arequipa at 3:00pm. It is the only way to travel along the south coast of Peru. It wasn´t too bad of an 8 hour ride. We watched some bad movies and read. They even fed us dinner on the bus.
