Sorrento old town

Again rain at night. And I sleep remarkably poorly. Somehow I just don’t fall asleep. We are on the third floor and we have a tiny balcony with two metal chairs on it over a very narrow cobblestone street. We left the doors open for some fresh air and I listen to the sounds of rain running of the roofs of our building and the one across the street and splashing down into the street.
At some point I must have slumbered because I seem to wake up and light is filtering in through the curtains.
Sisi slept like a rose and is anxious to try the breakfast downstairs. The dining area has only three tables for two. And the food is excellent, like everything in this hotel.
We take a stroll through the town to our next hotel next to the sea. The walk is only 300 meter (900 ft) as the bird flies. But we walk double that distance, including a 100m (300ft) descent over steep stone stairs from the high cliff on which Sorrento is located, to the narrow harbor below.
I check out the ferry to Capri, but it’s cancelled because of the weather. We’ll have to check again tomorrow.
We return to the hotel for a cup of tea, and then transfer our luggage down the cliff to our new abode.
This time we relax with our books and I enjoy an early siesta to compensate for the poor night.
In the afternoon, under threatening skies, we return to the old town and for several hours we roam through the maze of narrow streets. It’s quiet because there are no tourists. The lady in a shop where they produce inlaid wood products tells us that most shops are closed now, due to the lack of tourists. “In the summer it’s very busy. The streets are full of people.”
I guess we picked the right season.
It’s too early for dinner so we return home for a shower. It’s dark already, and everywhere Christmas lights are blinking. On one of the squares is a truly gigantic Christmas tree. A large Santaclaus is dwarfed by it.
In the evening we return to our favorite restaurant. Sisi has fallen in love with the seafood salad. I fell in love with the pizza. Quiet music of the sixties is playing, other customers enter and the waiters watch soccer when not serving customers. The typical calm and unassuming atmosphere I enjoy.
Afterwards in de dark we find our way down the cliff. I smell the sea and hope the weather will allow us to sail for Capri tomorrow.
