Relaxing in Arusha

Wednesday, August 15, 2018
Arusha, Arusha Region, Tanzania
A day of rest. Everyone sleeps in, except for Sisi and Mariles, who start laundry by hand.
After breakfast, we lounge (which means, to do nothing) until noon. Then we decide to go to the African Cultural Heritage Center, which turns out to be a combination of museum and art gallery where everything is for sale. Paintings of animals, some excellent, some less, statues of animals and people in traditional clothing or characteristic circumstances, but also traditional religious and ceremonial masks, furniture in the shape of animals - a huge modern center with four or five floors.
The prices are equally impressive. I don't think I saw anything below  $500. But many above $5000 and quite a few over $10.000.
Still altogether a very interesting visit, and one that triggers thinking. About slavery, about primitive religion, art, and lack thereof.
Upon our return everyone is still so tired that we all take a siesta.
After a final great supper we go to sleep early. Humphrey (mtoto) and I will pick up our car at 7am tomorrow morning.
