The Big Red Truck tours the San Juan Valley

South Fork, Colorado, United States
First thing this morning we went to the rally hall here in the campground and had Saturday breakfast before loading up in The Big Red Truck and headed towards Pagosa Springs which lies in the San Juan Valley. On the way out of town we pulled into a local campground that had the remains of a cabin on property that was used as the cabin that Sparky Griswold and his family, along with Aunt Edna, rented in the Chevy Chase movie, "Vacation". Trying to out-remember each other on the happenings in that movie took up the next twenty minutes of our trip!

Our drive went up and over Wolf Creek Pass (nearly 11,000 feet ele .) which is an absolutely spectacular drive. Some say it is even more lovely than the road up to Creed and I think that John and I would agree that certainly the mountains that surround the drive to Pagosa Springs are much higher and craggier. We made a picture stop or two along the way as we were heading to the San Juan Valley, but as usual with huge scenery, it is impossible to catch the feel of the view...or at least I am unable to. I really wish some of you first class photographers were along to take the shots...need a job Dave N.?

Our first stop in Pagosa Springs was at the local Humane Society who had an advertised Bark Park.  Sheeba was able to get out and run around for about 30 minutes which she seemed to enjoy thoroughly. From the Bark Park, we drove back into town where we got out and wandered around a little. Pagosa Springs is a very nice resort town...full of "lookie loos" and fun to walk around in. They are famous for the hot springs and there are many areas in town that you can enjoy swimming or soaking in the famous waters . By the way, I now blame the son in law for the mocha frappe I had. I mean, he stopped in to get one and so what could I do? Just wondering.

After our frappe stop, we walked up the street to a couple of shops we wanted to check out. As we walked around a corner we heard a TERRIBLE banging racket and all of us looked around to see if we could tell what in the world was happening. It looked like something out of a Chevy Chase movie...a van with a hitch rack on the back which was LOADED with luggage had a very slight problem. It looked as if half of the luggage was now bounding along behind the van like wedding shoes after a wedding reception! Apparently it was all tethered together because it was still trailing along behind the van as it disappeared around the corner! I sure hope someone was able to flag them down or they may be like Sparky Griswold when the police officer flagged him down and all that was left of Aunt Edna's dog was the leash!!

After the excitement of the luggage debacle, we went to a local place for lunch that had an outside patio on which Miss Sheeba was welcome. We had a very good lunch (John and I split a turkey sandwich) after which we loaded up The Big Red Truck again and headed back towards South Fork. We got back to camp around 2:30. John is now busy taking care of some house keeping issues (putting up table cloth, chairs, etc.) since tomorrow we will once again be on the road. This evening we plan to play another round of Rummikub (I finally learned how to spell it!!). I won the last game...yay for me!! The Big Muf is looking forward to hitting the road again...he is such a traveling machine!

The Big Red Truck drove approximately 110 miles today.

PS...having trouble uploading the one video we took today. Will try later or tomorrow. Check back if you don't see it!

Pagosa Springs looks like a pretty neat place. Are the springs as hot as they are in Hot Springs, Arkansas? Your mountain pics are really spectacular. I don't think I could improve on them :-) Happy trails!!
