Well we had cooler weather last night because it was 46 degrees when we got up this morning...60 degrees inside until John got up and turned on the heat! I love having staff! We had plenty of time to get ready for our 10:30 appointment for our Red Bus tour this morning. We headed out at 10:00 for the five mile drive to the Apgar Transportation Center. The lady that was there checking everyone in (Peggy) turned out to be from Maryville, TN which lies just across the river from where we lived for over 30 years in Farragut, TN. Small world.
Our driver, Chad, pulled up in trusty Red Bus #109 pretty much right on time to take us to Logan Pass on Going-to-the Sun Road
. This road is a highlight of any visit. This 50-mile road combines both history and unparalleled scenery. While portions of the road remain open year-round, the higher sections only open after winter snows are plowed. This year the pass did not open until July2!
According to the brochure, "Glaciers that lie against mountains erode ever-steeper cliffs by repeatedly freezing and thawing, plucking rock loose. The moving ice carries the broken rock down-valley. Where glaciers surround a mountain peak they may eventually erode it to a tooth-like horn. The same back-cutting erosion may carve a mountain ridge as a shape-edged arete. Many subalpine lakes in the international peace park rest in the bottoms of cirques, steep-sided valleys once holding glaciers. Cirques look like giant ice cream scoops formed them. Unlike rivers. glaciers erode wide-bottomed, steep-sided, U-shaped valleys. Deep glacial lakes fill the bottoms of some larger glacial valleys. Where a small mountain glacier once joined a larger valley glacier, hanging valleys remain today
." While looking at today's pictures, you may see examples of some or all of the above.
We had a wonderful trip to Logan Pass...it was indeed AWE...mazing to see and experience. I took lots of pictures and John took some videos also. I will let them speak for the trip itself. We got back to the Apgar Transportation Center around 2:00, after which we got back in Mufasa and drove a mile back down the road into West Glacier where we had a light meal at Glacier Highland Restaurant. Very good food. After buying a couple of souvenirs, we headed back "home" to West Glacier KOA and are in for the evening.
Right now we are planning to head for Banff, Alberta, Canada in the morning. (think that I said Banff was in British Columbia yesterday...oops!) If you don't hear from us for a few days don't worry. If we stay in the National Park there, which we hope to do, there will very likely be no WIFI and our phone plan does not work in Canada. I will try to make notes and play catch up when we get back to a point where we can communicate. In the meantime, enjoy today's pictures (and hopefully videos if I can get them to upload). If I can't get the videos up, there again I will try to do so when I get better service and then will resend the same post and notify you that videos have been loaded.
We drove 11 miles today. Rode 60 miles on the Red Bus.
PS...Happy Birthday Larry Dwain!
AWE...mazing!!

I seem to remember that we were told they use dynamite to clear some of those roads in the spring.

Wow, fond memories of the traveling we did there many years ago when we lived in Great Falls, Montana for a while when The Stinger was in the Air Force and stationed at Malstrom AFB. It is a gorgeous park. I remember it smelled so fresh and piney. Looks like you had a great tour today. Enjoy Canada!!

Hey there you two... We loved today's pictures from The Red Bus. Enjoy Banff and Lake Louise. Are you going on up to Jasper? Be safe on the roads... Sending hugs

Glad you liked them. We had a great day. No, we don't plan to go to Jasper this trip. We have been there two or three times and I don't think we will go that far north. I am sure we will go to Lake Louise...I am positive there is a law that if you are that close you HAVE to go!!

John and Pat, so glad you went to Glacier. David and I did this trip for our 7th wedding anniversary. We did on a bus tour to Glacier N Park and the Canadian Rockies. We also went to Banff and Columbia Ice Fields and Lake Louise which I am going to assume is on your plan. A wonderful trip and I am going to have to look at those pics tonight on my PC. We also had a sunny day when we took those Red Buses and we also had the tarps rolled back. We could stand up when they parked to take pictures. That is a must do on anyone's bucket list. I am so glad to be able to relive that wonderful trip you are doing. I will be anxious to see the pics from Canada. I loaded your picture on my phone David Cropped it for me. Have a relaxing time in Canada I hope you get blue sky and sunny days. Love you both. Lora

Back in '78 I got to 'tent camp' across the US from Rochester, NY, N after
the Rockies, Tetons, Yellowstone etc. but Glacier was really my favorite.
Banff was 'socked in' but, yes, saw the Athabasca.
Watch for those moments that become special and memorable.
