Tikal was built between 700 and 200 BC. It is another Mayan site that was rediscovered in the 1800s. Every town near here, and some in Belize, are all about Tikal. It is about 70km from Flores to Tikal and everybody does it in a colectivo. I lucked out this morning cos mine was late and we went with only three of us so it was very comfortable.
The site is massive, heaps bigger than Chichen Itza . One of the temples is a 930mtr walk then it has got to be over 1km to the main Plazza. I think I walked about a round of golf, 5-6km. The site is not all clear so you walk long distances along jungle trails. I was hoping to see some birds but they were few and far between. Some of the temples you can climb, but not up the front, they have a stairway around the back. That was pretty cool, but hard work.
I changed hotel rooms today. The dodgy place I was at was rough and I knew that but what I didn't know was it is right next to a bar with live music. It was soooo loud I may as well have been in the bar. I can't explain how close my room was to the roof of the bar, they were touching. I couldn't sleep till after 1am so I moved today. He can keep the $10 for tonight I will be happy to get some sleep.
Tomorrow I am booked on the bus to Guatamala City. I was going further but the bus goes through GC so I may as well stay there and work out a plan from there.
