Getting Ready

Jarrettsville, Maryland, United States
Today was the day for packing and preparing for our trip. We fly out first thing in the morning stopping in Minneapolis before arriving in Anchorage. In Anchorage we will catch our flight to Homer. We are anxiously watching the volcano, Mt. Redoubt, which lies not far north of Homer across Cook Inlet, hoping that it does not decide to "blow its top" while we are visiting. It has been rumbling for about the last five weeks leading geologists to believe that an eruption is possible.
Our plans for the trip had been to spend six days in Homer with Jean Keene, known as the "Eagle Lady", who has been feeding the eagles in Homer for the last 30 years. Sadly she passed away in January, so we will be watching her beloved eagles without her. Since she was the only person allowed to feed the eagles in Homer, the feedings will stop at the end of March, when her helper will not longer be allowed to feed them in her place. Thus this huge gathering of eagles in one place will not occur here in the future.
After our week in Homer, we will head up to Anchorage to witness the ceremonial start of the 2009 Iditarod Race and the official start the following day.
This will be a new experience to see our beautiful 49th state in the winter.
