Wandering Through Regensburg

Regensburg, Bavaria, Germany
The morning was spent sitting on the upper deck as we traveled down the Danube for the last time. We passed small towns, castle ruins and another shrine built for Ludwig I. Upon arriving in Regensburg, we took a walking tour of the city. We walked along the waterfront toward the famous Stone Bridge. The story has it that in order to build the bridge quickly across the Danube the builders enlisted the aid of the devil. The bridge was completed in 11 years and the devil asked for the souls of the first three individuals that crossed the bridge. Fearing that he would be one of them, the builder sent a dog and two chickens across the bridge first. This made the devil angry and he tried to destroy the bridge leaving it with a hump in the middle. When he couldn't destroy it, he kicked it leaving it crooked.

Near the bridge was the historic Sausage House famous for its long, thin sausages . Leaving the riverfront we passed an original Roman tower and gate to enter the city. Moving through the narrow streets we traveled St. Peter’s Cathedral. From there we made our way to the Old Town Hall and Bismarck Place with the theater. As we returned toward the ship, we passed both the Dominican Church and Holy Trinity Church, which was the first church built as a protestant church in the area.

We returned to the ship, hoping to have Internet but alas that was not to be, so after lunch we headed out again toward the Stone Bridge and to look in the few shops that were open since it was Sunday and most stores in Germany close on Sundays.

By dinner time the ship was starting down the Main-Danube Canal.
