Out and About in Nurnberg

Nurnberg, Bavaria, Germany
The morning was once again spent on the upper deck as we made our way through the locks of the Main-Danube Canal. We arrived up on deck just as we were getting ready to leave one of the deepest locks on the canal, Leerstetten at 81 feet. By this time we had passed the continental divide and were going down the river. Arriving at Nurnberg, we boarded buses to travel into the city stopping first at the Zeppelin Field and the Documentation Center.

Zeppelin Field was the Nazi Party Rally Grounds were Adolph Hitler showed off his troops and power to make the people believe he was their leader . At the Documentation Center which had been built for the SS to use, but never completed, we had the opportunity to visit the historical story presented there about Hitler's rise to infamy through to the Nurnberg trials.

After leaving the Documentation Center, we rode passed some of the historical sites in the city including the building where the trials were held.

From there we went to the "Heilig Geist Spital"  where we enjoyed a lunch of salad, pork, sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes with apple strudel and ice cream for dessert. We were joined at lunch by local college students who shared their lives in the city with us.

On our walk to lunch we passed St. Sebaldus Church, the beautiful fountain which has a gold ring attached that legend has it if you turn it and make a wish your wish will come true and the Church of our Lady that contains a special window in which the “Christ Kind” appears during the holy season.

Leaving the restaurant we walked to of the sights around the city including St. Lawrence Church, the hangman’s house and bridge, and “Kettensteg”.

Then it was back to the bus stop for the return trip to the boat as it was an extremely hot day.

Tomorrow we will be in Bamberg at the end of the canal.
