Bopping through Bamberg

Bamberg, Bavaria, Germany
We had only a morning in Bamberg before we had to move down the river. We bused into town from the boat and met our tour guide, Irene. She was the best guide we had up to this point. Our walk started up Lange Street toward a shopping district. Irene was very interested in reminding us that shoes were on sale in the city. We stopped to look at Neptune's Fountain and then traveled the narrow streets to the Old Town Hall. Town Hall has a beautiful fresco on both the front and back. The three dimensional leg on the front directs your vision to the artist. The bridge over to the Town Hall has a large statue of the crucifixion.

From Town Hall we climbed the hill to the cathedral, a beautiful church with a large rose garden . The interior of the church, as with many we have visited, was very ornate. Contained within the church was a well used for baptismal water and a ornate sarcophagus.

Behind the church are the original buildings of the palace of the prince-bishops that once ruled this region. The rose gardens were colorful and the area offered a wonderful view of Bamberg and the monastery.

We returned to Town Hall and spent some time exploring on our own. By the way, we did take Irene's advice and bought some shoes since the warm weather was taking a toll on our feet. New sandals were in order.

The afternoon was spent cruising the Main River passing though a number of locks, small towns while watching birds on the water.

Tomorrow we are off to Wurzburg and Rothensberg.
