Walking Wertheim

Wertheim, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
We were not scheduled to arrive in Wertheim until late morning so the morning hours were spent traveling along the Main River. We once again entered a number of locks and at one of these we took on a glass blower from Wertheim. The locks provide easy locations for persons and things to be loaded or unloaded as the boat is close to a wall and is stationary for a period of time. This is called "lock hopping".

The glass blower was Karl Ihig, who provided us with an educational and interesting demonstration . He also came supplied with items to sell.

We arrived at Wertheim shortly before lunch. After lunch began our walking tour from the ship up to the Wertheim Castle with stops before and after at interesting locations in town. The town lies between the Main and the Tauber Rivers. Tauber River has flooded numerous times and these floods have been recorded on door frames and walls. There were also some interesting door frames and houses in town. The houses were sometimes built with the lowest floor smaller than the upper floors giving the house an odd look. This was done because the taxes on the house were charged by the ground floor dimensions so the smallest floor was the ground floor and the higher floors were larger.

The castle lies high above the city and gives nice views of the city below. As with many of the old European castles much of the castle is in ruins.

After our tour we spent some additional time in the city just looking around and enjoying the quaint atmosphere. We stopped at a little café and Fred treated himself to some German beer and I enjoyed an iced chocolate. It was a very hot day so the cool beverages tasted good.

We made our way back to the boat for dinner and after dinner enjoyed the very entertaining "River Explorer Crew Show". The crew is very personable and since the boat is very small, we got to know many of the crew members.

Tomorrow we will dock in Aschaffenburg, but we will be leaving the town to visit Heidelberg.
