This was departure day as we left Maryland for the next ten days to travel around Nevada and California, two states we have never had the chance to visit in the past. We arose early and drove to BWI Airport to board our Southwest flight to Las Vegas. This will be our jumping off point for our travels.
Our flight was on time and actually landed early in Vegas
. We were fortunate enough to get seats together even though we were some of the last people to board the plane with a window seat to boot. The skies were clear as we took off, but we were soon soaring over heavy cloud cover obscuring the ground below. We did get a glimpse of Lake Michigan and Chicago off to the north. Finally, after crossing the Mississippi we had clear skies as we flew over the fields of the midwest and the mountains of the west. We do indeed live in a vast and beautiful country.
Five hours later we were safely landing in Las Vegas heading off to get our rental car, a Ford Escape, to start making our way north to the ET Highway and the caches hidden along its shoulders. Our first stop was in Alamo just prior to the ET Highway to secure our lodging for the night and then it was off to the trail. The ET Highway is the Extraterrestrial Trail Highway which is named for the high number of UFO's that have supposedly been spotted along the road. In reality, the UFO's are probably experimental aircraft that are flown from the US airfield known as Area 51 which lies just south of the highway. There is very little along the highway except cattle as the road is located in open range ranch land. One town that sits on the ET Highway is Rachel, which takes advantage of the Alien rumors with the Little AleInn complete with a spaceship in front.
We cached from the start of the trail to Rachel. Then called it a night and headed back to Alamo for dinner and sleep. It was a long 27 hour day.
Tomorrow we will continue caching the trail.
