Our Second Try for Yosemite

After being snowed out of Yosemite on Tuesday, we decided that since we were within a couple of hour drive we would try one more time to see the park. The weather forecast still included snow, but the roads into the park were open although the pass across the mountain was still closed. We are glad we went. Even though the sky was mostly cloudy with occasional light snow/rain coming down, we did have some periods of sunshine. The temperature had climbed into the upper 30's so any chance of laying snow was slim.

We entered the park near the Mariposa Redwood Grove which contains the fallen remains of the original drive through redwood . We wanted to see the tree so we headed off on what we though was a two mile round trip. After walking up the mountain for close to a mile we discovered the hike was a four+ mile round trip so we decided that that might prove too much for us. We did get to see some interesting redwoods and the remains of fallen trees baring roots or burn scars. They do run a tram to see the entire area, but it was not running today due to the weather conditions.

From there we traveled toward Yosemite Village, passing the famed El Capitan. From inspiration point we were able to view El Capitan, Half Dome and Cathedral Mountain. Driving on we passed Bridal Veil Falls.

Wildlife was more abundant here than in Sequoia. In our travels we encountered deer, California ground squirrels, Uinta chipmunks, more Acorn Woodpeckers, Steller Blue Jays and best of all a young black bear. We watched the bear for almost an hour as he first climbed around in a tree and then roamed the ground around the tree eating acorns.

Leaving the park we had to start making our way back south hoping to get to Death Valley tomorrow.
