We decided today that we should try to see a show while here in Las Vegas. The one show that I have wanted to see was Terry Fator, who won the second year of America's Got Talent. That meant we had to be in Vegas in time for the show tomorrow, so we took today to make the drive to Hoover Dam and the historic Route 66. We remember the television show by that name.
The Hoover Dam which lies on the Colorado River is the structure that creates Lake Mead
. The dam was built in the 30's to help control the Colorado River and generate electricity. We attempted the park in the parking garage near the dam, but were turned away for lack of room, which left us the free parking area high up on the opposite hill. We were left with an easy hike to the dam, but a healthy climb back to the car. After taking the required photos of the dam, we went up to the overlook for Lake Mead. There on the rocks below antelope ground squirrels frolicked about with each other. Then it was on to Route 66.
Old Route 66 was made famous by the television show of that name. You were told to "get your kicks on Route 66". The drive took us back into California. On the entire trip we had not seen a train and on the drive down we saw train after train carrying containers which probably had arrived from China or Japan. Fred was anxious to put his feet on Route 66 and he was successful complete with the logo painted on the road.
Back in Las Vegas, we started our exploration but going up to the top of the Eiffel Tower in the Paris Resort
. The tower is half the height of the original in France. From the top, we could look down on the fountain in front of the Bellagio which is active every 15 minutes and moves to the music playing at the time. We also got a great night view of "The Strip" as well as the surrounding lights of Las Vegas.
Once down from the tower, we walked the streets for a while taking in the sights and watching the many "interesting" people populating the streets along with us. Apparently you can have your picture taken with just about anyone (for a fee) as celebrity look a-likes are everywhere.
After a busy day, we made our way slowly back to our motel.
Tomorrow we will stay in the Las Vegas area and enjoy the show.
