Luang Prabang, Laos

Hey Hey and a Big G'Day toya,

The original name of Laos is 'Lane Xang’
Or ‘The Land of a Million Elephants.’

In the past and even today most of these impressive animals were/are used as labor to carry heavy loads in logging and obviously throughout history, many of the Elephants have been mistreated so to help protect the elephants from abuse and cruel work, ten years ago elephant camps were developed which also offer them a much happier and easier life!

Now For a Bit On The ‘Tiger Trail Elephant Village

‘Ban Xang’ Elephant Village was set up in 2003 by a German man named Markus Peschke who rescued eleven female elephants and gave them a new home. Located in beautiful surroundings between mountains and the Nam Khan River is an excellent choice to get to know more about the lives of the elephants and to get right on up there and take one of them for a spin around the village. .

Did You Know?

The Asian elephant differs in many ways to its bigger brother from Africa, it is smaller in size, its ears are tiny in comparison and its tusks are also much smaller. When a female elephant gives birth the baby’s weight is around one hundred kilograms, the duration of her pregnancy is almost two years, the weight of an elephant is up to five tons, the height around three and a half meters and the length up to six and a half meters!

After the elephant village why not make a day of it and take a twenty minute cruise up the river and visit the Tad Sae Waterfalls.
