A Day At The Zoo & A Birthday Cake Or Two

Hey Hey and a Big G'Day toya,

Zoo's and what to think or do about them?
I have always been totally confused!
But I do love Zoolander!

My students had seen and held cats and dogs, I have taught them with colourful pictures about the animals I have had the honour of touching and holding but what do we do with Zoo's? I honestly love a long day at a zoo but I have been to so many zoo's in China (in my first 4 or so years) that I promised myself I would never visit another again.

So for the next six years I didn't!
There were horrible!

Unlike last term when we visited an ancient hillside temple overlooking a beautiful lake, this term as a school we were to visit the zoo. At first I declined, and declined and then declined again until I asked my students what animals they had actually ever seen..a dog, a cat, a bird and a frog, the usual characters. So I rang a 'local friend' and asked, am I going to want to set up a midnight 'save them crew' and then want to beat people and the answer was, no.

It turned out to be a very nice place and almost all of the animals were wonderfully taken care of, had more than enough space (for a zoo that is) and happily jumped, bounded and ran around. The zoo staff were always near by and taught the children what they could feed them and what not to feed them ie: plastic wrappers etc. The only two 'cages/enclosures' that made me want to really shed tears were the elephant enclosure and the vulture and eagle enclosure BUT thankfully the zoo staff also share my feelings and sometime within the next year they will have new and very spacious homes.

How were the kids?

They were so well behaved that I continually asked them what school they were from which made them so very proud of themselves. For lunch we had a picnic and they all used the bins for their rubbish and we then played games like Duck Duck Goose and Chasey. We got back to school around three in the afternoon (left at 8am) and when I found out it was two of my students birthdays....

What does a good school do on such a day?
Have classes? No, we went to the kitchen and made birthday cakes
Just another absolutely amazingly Perfect day in the life of me here in China!
