Otranto

Otranto, Puglia, Italy
We headed down the coast, but it wasn't a day to linger although there were some brave souls on a beach.

We continued to Otranto and spent the rest of the day looking around the town before driving to Agriturismo Podere San Michele where we spent the next 3 nights.

The next day, we took the road south along the rocky coastline and passed several small resorts where the Italians are determined to find a spot to sunbathe or swim, however uncomfortable and whatever the obstacles!

Finally we reached Santa Maria di Leuca at the bottom of the heel of Italy, known as finbus terrae or end of the earth by the Romans. There is a church which is an important place of pilgrimage and a lighthouse

We took a more inland route back, stopping at Specchia for a wander round the pretty piazza with an ice cream. Our last stop was to off-road down cart-tracks to hunt down the rough-rock Dolmens di Scusi, scattered amongst olive trees.

We had a relaxing last day, and went in search of a beach. We found a huge empty carpark as the season is really over, and walked through the trees. It was more coast than beach, but it was too windy to sunbathe so it didn't matter.

Tomorrow we head north, but this time straight up the middle of the heel.
