13 hours later, having travelled overnight in a sleeper bus, we arrived up North West in Jaisalmer.
Ive never seen a sleeper bus before
.
We slept in an upstairs, 2 person coupe, aircon, thank goodness, packed in like sardines in a can, and no loo facilities on the bus.
They stop 5 hrs into the journey, in case you wish to partake of some midnight greasy, dirty, hovel of a restaurant food.
And horrors, a pitstop in bathrooms that have seen 24 hours of usage, and possibly millenieu of no cleaning.
The 1st thing one does,on the way to the loo, is check that youve brought loo paper, then u roll up your pants to the knee, take a large breathe of so-called fresh air outside, side step the sludge on the floors, find a loo that has a bolting door, and squat over the loo, hoping not to lose your balance.
These pit stops are possibly the worst experience of bus travelling.
Most unpleasant, and the same throughout all of Asia.
Now, everytime you need to take transport to any place, whether near or far, you have to find transport to the bus, from the drop off point, after your trip, to your GH, hoping youre not being ripped off, and that the tuk tuk driver can speak English, and knows your GH, because there are so many GHs,etc
.
A major mission everytime.
One needs the patience of a saint.
Our GH was dark and shabby, but what can one say, and no hot water.
A list of excuses were given to us, that in the end we just went with the flow.
We walked around the area around our GH.
What beautiful stone carved havellis (houses) all over, tightly packed on either side of narrow alleyways.
And,cows galore!
Needless to say, cow poops galore too.Luckily is hot and dry, so the cow pats dry up relatively fast.
Walking around, looking up at the havellis, takes a lot of concentration, as one doesnt want to step in cow poop.
Seems like a lot of people keep cows for milk, and because there is no space for them to shelter, they are left to roam the streets, and somehow they find their way back to their owners at meal times.
Some of them can be found trying to find food amongst the occasional pile of rubbish.
We were at an oily samoosa stand, when I felt a slobbery sensation on my elbow.
Here stood a docile cow, nudging me for a bite of my food.
I tried to move away, but he was quite adament to have a bite of samoosa
.
Luckily someone scooted it away.
The following day we went up the alleys to the Jaisalmer Fort.
Impressive huge walls, bats in the entrance arch, mostly small shops inside, some hotels, and Jain temples.
Great views of the dusty town from the ramparts.
Then we found a swimming pool at a former palace, now a top hotel, and spent the next 2 afternoons literally chilling on deck chairs in total comfort.
What bliss!!
Every day we saw fighter jets flying in to land in the airport near by.
Initially, we thought that the current tensions between Pakistan and India were getting worse.
Then we found out from a woman, that they actually manufacture the Mig fighter jets in India.
The planes were just practicing manouvres.
Her grand father is an airforce engineer.
Geez, there goes my fantasy of needing rescue from some on-the-brink-of war-town, by some dashing army clothing clad general.
But then again, on 3rd thoughts, these men here do so much hawking and spitting, that I would be in a lunatic asylum within days, from the horror of the sound of all that.
Eeeew!!!
Cows, cows, everywhere!
