After my last night on the " island", I stayed a little extra time in my hammock that night, looking up at the stars, listening to the sounds of nature. I almost slept out there that night, but knowing without a mosquito net, I would regret it in the morning. I arranged to take the 100 baht taxi truck from the Coral View Resort next door, the diving place on the same beach as mine ( the only other resort) that I have visited a few times to enjoy their 50 baht Chang Beer happy hour and take advantage of their cheap transportation several times daily to down. They also have free Wi-Fi, which is great because I can use my Handy IPhone without being charged any roaming. At breakfast the morning of my departure a woman whom I'm assuming is the owners mom since she wanders around not doing much , swatting flies and yelling at the staff, I'll call her mother hen. Well mother hen approaches me during my breakfast while I'm checking my email from my phone as says to me " You no stay here, no? I see you from time to time, but you no stay here, but you use Internet for free?" Ummm, well,....I stutter not wanting to get hit with a bill from then for all the time I have been here ..times 3 baht a minute for non guests..." Oh no, Im just reading old mail and checking my calender" I smile sweetly. She gives me a dirty stare and moves on to swat more flies. Geez...now if I'm able to get on the Internet, with no password, than its free! But I wasn't about to state my case on my last day of paradise.
I rode to town in the back of the taxi truck, soaking up every last palm tree and bump in the dirt road, clinging on the rack on the top of the truck from back on my bench as we rode to the Ferry that would take me back to Koh Samui
. On the way, the driver stopped at the local produce market, and outside grocery store to hand off his list of items needed back at the resort written in a journal that was handed to a young girl who ran up to the truck as it briefly stopped by like she was expecting him. Such simplicity is so enjoyed by people like me who crave it so much , living in a big city where such a simple thing would not exist..
I'm staying one night in the big island of Koh Samui, in which I only passed thru on my way thru over 8 days ago But my flight is early in the morning back to Bangkok, and it is impossible for the ferry that leaves Ko Tao, stops in Koh Phangan before reaching Koh Samui would get me here in time for my flight.
So without a backpack in sight, I hold my head high once again, and get a taxi to my Hotel Ibis, where I'm getting an incredible airline rate of $35 ( rooms here go for $120 a night) wow- thats almost a week in my other places!
The hotel is nice, complete with luxurious like no Geckos, air conditioning, and even a TV
. Strange how I have not had, or even watched TV in a month. I don't have any desire to turn it on, I'm just not ready to come back to reality, not yet. I get my ipod out, and hook it up to my handy travel speakers and listen to some Cat Stevens, taking me back to my island hideaway instead of reminders of things ahead which mean going home, and I'm taking that reality slowly.
I decide to get one last afternoon at the beach, and the beaches here are beautiful as well. My hotel is right on the beach, even has a pool. Why would you use a pool when there is a beautiful ocean only a few steps away? I find a nice spot on the sand and quickly notice that the crowd has changed as well. The fit backpackers, have been replaced with a lot of people who look like they could use a hike or two, and a lot of men in speedos. Just my opinion, men should NEVER wear these small items of beachwear, I don't care what country you are from.
My hotel did have a great afternoon Barbecue for 250 baht, about $7, you get a combination of barbecue skewers, chicken, fish, meat and a salad too, wow! It was great, and I enjoyed it with an amazing view of the beach in front of me.
Tonight I'm heading into " town" a place called Chaweng, the happening place here in Koh Samui located on a popular beach. I went here many years ago with my daughter Sarah, when she was 16, do you remember that Sarah? It was a little overwhelming and shocking to both of us back then. Alot of bars attracting the male clientele, with their barely dressed young Thai girls louring them in to buy expensive drinks and more I suppose.
But Chaweng also has great shopping, cheap Internet, and great restaurants on the beach for dinner. So I'm hoping that it will be fun( and entertaining) now that I have pretty much seen it all, right Johanna? And little will shock me...I will have to update if that changes :)

Koh Samui, that brings back memories. We were there 23 years ago when there was no airport, hardly any electricity, no resorts and Chaweng was a sleepy little town. The entire island was covered with palms and the beaches were deserted. It was truly a paradise!
Enjoy the rest of your trip!

Hi Iris!
I would of loved to have been to Ko Samui back then, it a little too much for me there now, its too bad since the beaches still are very beautiful. You are very lucky to have been all these places when you did, thats when it was real paradise :)

Hi Eliz, it's too bad about Ko Samui getting built up so much by the rich. Tom & are were here only about 10 years ago & it was still a beautiful, untouched by tourism isle. We stayed at a cottage on the South China Sea for $7.50/night. I bought a beautiful black rice basket there that I straddled between my legs on our $5/day motor schedule rental. Ahh, the memories...
