Hoi An, Vietnam
Last night we went to bro-in-laws 80th at the Ai Hoi hotel. At last we are all gathered together at least for one night. My daughter and son and their partners, my sister and hubby, sisters friends Barb John and Angela, my two nephews and their partners. After drinks at the bar we sat at two long tables facing each other and after a few more drinks we went round the table talking about Ron and the things he had done in his life. I spoke about him coming from humble beginnings in Neptune Street Richmond, a street narrower than the lanes in Hoi An, and being elected to the Institute of Australian Engineers, the only non-engineer to gain this honour.
The meal was light but lots of different tastes and a good quantity .
Back to our hotel late and the place appeared locked, late being 10.30. We knocked and the door was opened by someone who had been sleeping on the couch in the foyer. This is normal here apparently. Someone told the story last night of going into a kitchen at a hotel late at night and finding the kitchen staff sleeping on the floor.
Today went to an amazing T-shirt shop run by a Frenchman, http://papaya-tshirt.com/ , lovely designs. If you come here get one.
Down to Blue Wave (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g298082-d1627461-Reviews-Song_Xanh_Restaurant_Cafe_The_Blue_Wave-Hoi_An_Quang_Nam_Province.html) on Cua Dai road at lunchtime to meet the family again. I got a taxi and he dropped me at a place called Blue and White. I knew it was the wrong place as I had passed Blue Wave a few times before. He didn't believe me and I was confused by his insistence it was the right place so I got out. One look inside and I knew it was wrong so I went next door where the scooter riders congregate to see if I could get a lift. They were all eating and didn't want to drive me but I looked up Google maps and found the address of the right place and showed the guy. "Ahhhh 5 minutes, that way" indicating further down the road. I started walking and 20 minutes later found the place. See pics. Lunch with Jess and Tim ,and nephew Chris in the ridiculously Viet Collingwood jumper he had made. I am getting one too, but I want Saigon Magpies across the back.
