After the usual breakfast round, two coffees at Mia and two with the family at as yet unnamed coffee house (I don't know it but it's near the museum) Nick and I went searching for Hoi An South the huge development over the new Cua Dai bridge which I have mentioned many times, so often you are probably sick of hearing of it. First we went to Water Banana village where we were told 150,000 for a ride in a coracle. No Carfey available so we turned tail. This was the same place where Fish Sauce lady took me and I was charged 300,000 for the same thing so I was a little predjudiced about coracle rides. Then over the bridge and turned left down to the fishing port where we found a small chair place for iced coffee and a look at the boats. This, I thought, was the place which was going to be gutted for the new resort. That remains to be seen as we left and headed south on the old beach road until we found a cyclone wire fence in the wilderness, just a fence not enclosing anything, a symbolic fence which contained a gate and above the gate was Hoi An South Phase one. A road led through the gate seeming to go nowhere. So this was it, nothing. They say 1800 people will be displaced by the huge resort and I hope the fishing village is not part of it. I have included a picture of the resort and just above where the bridge crosses the river is the fishing village along the bank of the river. The whole area is a network of tiny roads aand little settlements but the Govt in their wisdom wants a casino and resorts. Go figure.
We made it back to the black smooth strip of bitumen which stretches to Tam Ky and Highway One and which will bring the busloads of tourists to the resort and then back over the bridge and home nicely sunburnt
.
Tonight Nick and I went back to Con Chai and had squid cooked in fish oil, Bahn Chi Nuong which is slices of pork cooked crispy like bacon, and Thai hotpot which is a tureen sitting on a flame on the table with a plate of additives such as prawns, slices of fish, clams and I think Morning Glory with of course chili, carrots and lemongrass. We were too greedy and couldnt finish half of it so we asked for Ma Ly or takeaway as we thought. After sitting waiting for 20 minutes we asked again and all the staff clustered around to see what we wanted. After many questions of Google Translate we finally got through that we wanted to take the leftovers away and they confessed they'd thrown it out. We suspect they kept it but you can't be angry with these lovely people so it was Com Sao, no problem and we sat some more while the rain pelted down outside.
