Dinosaur Run

Lark's Quarry, Queensland, Australia

Lark's Quarry is about 110klm south west of Winton. It's not a town, nor near one. Lark's is the site of about 3500 dinosaur footprints left in an ancient river bed millions of years ago. Importantly the site tells the story of about 20 small dinosaurs drinking from the river when a large carnivore came along and they scattered, all but one who became dinner.

There are 3 tours but we arrived 1st as the first began, however, a curator suggested that if we're not in a hurry we should go for a walk, have some lunch and join the midday tour as it has a lot less people and no kids. Done. This is very heard country, rocky and very dry, but it has a beauty in itself which really appeals to us. After an hour walk, and much photography, we returned to the Nissan, got out the camp chairs, grabbed a cider from the fridge and a sandwich and settled in under a shady tree. It was very quiet and a relaxing interlude.

The Dinosaur Stampede, or Run, is well documented and worthwhile to google. It is housed in a football field sized building on the actual site. The tour is well presented and entertaining. Once again most of the staff are volunteers? Google it rather than us ranting on.

After the tour we opted for a different road back to Winton (where we left the van). We went west via the "Old Cork" road, through Cork property, following the same road which Nick travelled only a week earlier. This road runs over a large plateau, quite high. We stopped at a lookout and began to take photos. Roscoe used the Hema maps on our iPad to work out where Davenport Downs and Nick were. The lookout was less than 150klm from Nick, so Roscoe started calling out to him, which echoed off the surrounding hills and we laughed when he didn't answer us...as usual! See the hills in the distance (photo right), well Davenport would be about 80klm behind those hills.
We will now forever regret not making that journey!

Our route turned north after the lookout, through Carisbrooke Station which lead us threw some beautiful and diverse channel country landscapes. Back in Winton we had the best meal at the locally recommended Winto Hotel. This pub is not in the main street, and it is not as "posh" as the others, but it has a beautiful beer garden, a super friendly couple who own it and what a meal. Roscoe had a T-bone steak which was cooked perfectly and just melted under the knife. It puts to shame so called "Steak" restaurants we have been to on the Gold Coast or any city. Evi had a beautiful large Barramundi fillet with prawns and topped with a cream and lemon sauce. Finishing the meal for both of us was a tragedy!
