Westward ho!

Georgetown, Queensland, Australia

Cumberland, to be precise Cumberland Historic Mine Site about 24klm west of Georgetown! In the middle of savannah scrub sits a five storey chimney, once the powerhouse of a gold processing plant. It sits beside a man made lagoon of about 4 hectare surrounded by trees filled with birds and wildlife. In the shade of some small trees we sit beside the lily covered water watching ducks, eagles, and a variety of other feathered creatures...and I write this blog!

We left Innot early, before 10am, and drove the Savannah Way past the Undara Lava Tubes (been there done that years ago, and as they're millions of years old we figured they haven't changed in the past 10). We were surprised to quickly come upon Mount Surprise, checked out a truly lovely caravan park with lots of grass, shade and a pet emu wandering the grounds. We were sorely tempted to stay as it was a quaint township, but it was too early in the day, so west, ever west.

Not long after Surprise we began to descend from the Atherton Tableland into rolling savannah scrubland. After an hour we stopped for fuel and a sandwich at Georgetown, read about Cumberland and here we are! On about 80 hectare there are probably 6 RV's and caravans. The day is hot but not humid, the sky clear and we look forward a starry night and a fire...and rum'n'cokes!
