A day trip

Karumba, Queensland, Australia

We really didn't like the story of all travellers who had been to Karumba regards the packed Caravan Parks, and given no alternatives, we opted to stay in Normanton and do a couple of day trips to Karumba.

Our new best mate Peter rang and has organised for a fishing charter at 7:30am Wednesday morning, this after a BBQ with he and Francis on Tuesday night with an invite to "enjoy" his wine cellar....evil bugger! After a long walk in the cooler early hours, breakfast, coffees, rest, 500 metres up and down the 25 metre pool we headed to Karumba just prior mid-day.

Karumba lies about 20-30klm north, but the road skirts creeks and swamps and elongates to 70klm of flat but varied driving through swampy scrub, scrub and plain-lands.

Karumba...several adjectives come to mind, but many (beautiful, pretty, quaint) don't really hit the mark! A fisherman's paradise...apparently, is split into the township itself and Karumba Point community about 4klm away. The Point is the focus of tourism with 3 large caravan parks, Ash's Famous Fish'n'Chips and the Karumba Point Tavern, the place you watch the sunset over the Gulf!

We did the 50c tour of both communities, settled into the Tavern for a refreshing ale, wandered over to Ash's for a feed of Barra & King Salmon then met up with fellow travellers John & Jo for several more ales. John is a Cairns Policeman and Jo a Nurse who works the Thursday Island communities. Great arvo, and John & Jo are joining our fishing adventure Wednesday.
