Sunday Oct. 14th
It's another bright sunny morning and we have an early start to Jabiru in the Kakadu National park
.
We thought by taking this route it would be differnt scenery but it was not to be.There were afew wallabys on the road but they scurried back as we approached. They are so small compared to the kangaroo.
We stopped at the Aurora Kakadu National Park entrance to get our tickets to the park and when we arrived a flock of white birds came flying down from the trees. They were white parrots who were enjoying themselves in the sprinkler system. It was neat to see them bobbing to get a drink as well as getting their feathers wet.
When we reached Jabiru we filled up for our return to Katherine. Jabiru is a place for hikers and walkers but has a police station and afew houses. There really isn't much there to see unless you want to hike back into the wilderness. We finally finished the circuit of the 425 kms through the park only to rejoin the Stuart hwy. at Pine Creek. Now we are repeating this part of our journey. There hasn't been much to see so were happy when arrived back in Katherine.
We got to the camp grounds which was a beautiful spot and had a swim
. It was refreshing and it didn't take long for our suits to dry. It was good to relax. We drove 559kms today.
Monday Oct. 15th
Another gorgeous day but hot.
We had a leisure departure today which was rather nice as we did so much yesterday.
Today we are heading to Western Australia, the last of the states we will be visiting ending our journey in Perth, the capitol of WA. The people have been so friendly with their g'days whenever they meet you.
We saw alot of greyish-white cattle with a hump just below the nape of their necks. Eric says that they are Brahams as he has some Cayman Stamps with pictures of these on them. He says that they come from India. Sometimes he is a wealth of information and never ceases to amaze me.
The eucalyptus are beautiful and plentiful so the koalas certainly won't starve.
The terrain is hilly and mountainous which is a nice change. We came across a terrible crash and when we stopped at the Victoria River Roadhouse and were told that the driver survived
. The crash happened last night and it was still burning when we arrived this morning.
After lunch and filled with fuel we decided to go on to Kununurra for the night. So now we have to get rid of all our fruits, vegeatables, nuts, plants etc. as there is a quaratine security station as you cross into Western Australia. We went through this the last time we were in Australia so knew about this one. However we didn't know about the other ones.
Today we have seen alot of cows on the road and fortunately they don't like the sound of the horn honking at them so run away thank goodness. Now the time has changed again.
We stopped in Kununurra for fruits and veggies as we had replenish our stock and then onto the campground.
We got a lake view spot at the campground right on the man-made lake of Kununurra and were able to watch the sunset along with alot of other campers. However there was a crocodile that kept his eyes on us. It was very intesting to see one that close where you actually see it blink and move its eyes as people moved around
. Evidently there is a difference between salt water crocs and fresh water crocs. The fresh water ones have long tapered noses and this was a fresh water one. The salt water ones have short snouts according to the information in the book that we were given. I don't care whether this guy was friendly or not as the jaw and teeth are enough to make you stop and think.
Tuesday Oct. 16th
It is another sunny morning and the crocodile has moved away. The lake is as sooth as a mill pond with tiny bubbles from the fish coming to the surface.
We left Kununurra shortly after 8am as we were making good use of our internet time. It is certainly sporatic and when we do get on it is to get caught up on the blog.
We have now joined the Great Northern Hwy. and are heading SW. The terrain is different today from the past few days as there are mountains to see. We learned about the boab trr that has a shiny grey bark and has a very thick trunk which appears to be cut off across the top and the branches grow from there
. They are so different and unusual for us.
We saw alot of cattle this afternoon and one was walking down the white line without a care in the world -- fortunately it didn't like the sound of the horn so ended staying alive.
We arrived in Halls Creek and fueled up before we got to the campground. We had a swim, light supper and early to bed. It was 40C this afternoon and we only drove 366 kms.today.
Wednesday Oct. 17th
It is another bright and hot sunny morning. Today we want to reach Broome so it will be a long day.
Stopped in Fitzroy Crossing to get gas and saw a neat lodge with a campground so we went back to get a coffee and hot water for my tea. It was a lovely place. Eric finally got a picture of a boab tree as there were several on the grounds.
Since our stop the scenery has become the same as the past several days with scrub grass and some trees and bushes -- oh yes I mustn't forget the termite mounds.
We finally arrived in Broome (40C) . We had a swim just to get cooled down and then we walked to thebeach
. We should have done it the other way around as it was really hot. This Cable Beach is suppose to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and it is lovely.
Thursady Oct. 18th
We had a leisure morning as we are going to do some sightseeing. It is going to be hot again.
Our first stop was at the Tourist Bureau to find out what to see in this city which is the capital on the Northern Territory. Broome is famous for the development of the Mother of Pearl plastic button back in the 1950s and produce 60% of the worlds large cultured pearls.
Having been given a map of the city we set out for China Town which consists of boutiques housed in the old buildings from the early fishing days. There is also a mall and we were able to get a nice cup of coffee, not roadhouse coffee.
Our next stop was the Pearl Luggers to learn about the deep sea pearl fishing industry dating back to the 1800s. There were 2 old lugger boats that have been refurbished on display. The pearls are lovely and very expensive
. They stayed in the shops as I don't wear pearls very often.
Our next stop was the Town Beach -- what a beautiful spot. There is a playground for the children and a cafe for lunch or just to get a cold drink. There are even picnic tables and benches there so families can go and spend the day as the beach is a great spot with its sandy shore.
Our next stop is the harbour. The ground is so terracotta red against the tourquoise water making a stricking picture.
Our next stop is Gantheaume Point to see the lighthouse and the rugged coastline. There is a home there which is absolutely beautiful surrounded by a fence and the gardens are immaculate. We walked to the lighthouse and with the breeze the heat wasn't too bad.
We then went to Cable Beach to see the camels and there weren't any. This country has over 500,000 or more wild camels and we haven't seen one.
Our last stop was Beaurepairs to get the tires checked once again.
We changed campgrounds for tonight and when we returned we went for a swim.
We had a good day and got see alot of the city which was nice and to just recharge our batterys.
