Easter Sunday - Wine and Cava Tour

Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain and Canary Islands

Got news for you – those of you who learned about “The rain in Spain...”. It does not fall “...only on the plain”. It also falls on the fellow enjoying his wine and cigar on the terrace outside his hotel room last night. Not really complaining – it was probably only seventeen drops - we have had fantastic weather for the entire trip.

Today we did one of our favorite things – toured wineries, including tasting. We bought into a bus tour which took us about an hour out of Barcelona and first did a small winery called Juan Leon. They had a nice display of varieties of grape vines and offered a young and a mature cabernet sauvignon. It was neat to see the difference in old vines and newer vines and how they are pruned. Then we visited Torres, a large winery. After seeing fermentation and barrel ares, we were offered four different wines paired with four different cheeses. Finally we visited Freixenet, of which Cordon Negro happens to be Marj's favorite sparkling wine. We now know how to pronounce that name and understand that sparkling wine made in Spain is called cava. It is a huge winery
with not so many barrels, but millions of bottles in storage. We were offered two different cavas and assorted small bites.

This is the last blog entry from Spain and we expect to be home dead tired Monday night.
