Lectures and crafts

At Sea, Indonesia
After Zumba, mum goes off choir practice. As several of the people who sit on our dinner table participate in the ship choir and as the topic of talk at dinner usually turns to the songs learnt that day, I went along to hear them practice. Come time for their big debut, they should quite a few songs.

After choir practice, we headed off to hear the days science lecture about some of the issues with the concepts behind Darwin's Tree of Life . The lecture was quite good and broke down some complex ideas into what I though were bite sized chunks. Long story short, the main premise of the lecture was that due to things like horizontal gene transfer and how organisms without a nucleus swap generic material, the 'tree of life’ is less tree like (with distinct branches), more thicket like (where branches overlap).

In a slight change in sea day routine, I decided to attend the afternoon art and craft session that the entertainment staff run. Today’s activity was making tissue paper puff ball things. I am not talented in the art and craft department, so needless to say my puff ball was not the best one ever made – while slightly puffy, it was not anything like a ball.

As for our trivia team, the Peach Pies are sitting in the upper half of the ladder for the eight day competition. While we’re unlikely to win, we’re chuffed with how well we are going.

Fun fact:

Pogonophobia – Phobia of beards.
