The Gulf Stream comes to town

At Sea, North Carolina, United States
Today was little on the bumpy side as we crossed the Gulf Stream. We didn’t hit huge waves, but there was enough movement in the ship that you found it difficult to walk in a straight line. There was also a little bit of sea spray hitting the outside decks.

The Gulf Stream is a powerful and warm Atlantic Ocean current that originates at the tip of Florida and flows along the eastern coastline of the United States and Newfoundland before crossing the Atlantic towards Europe. The ocean current influences the temperature of the seas it covers, and it is argued that the climate of Western and Northern Europe is warmer than it would otherwise be without its influence. It is largely caused by the converging of warm currents that meet in the Caribbean by Florida and are then taken across the Atlantic by the trade winds that blow in the topics. As we experienced throughout the day, the Gulf Stream can impact on shipping in area.

The rest of the day was relatively normal, with the usual sea day activities being done.

Fun fact:
The Gulf Stream could be used in renewal power generation.
