Well that’s awkward

At Sea, Manu'a, American Samoa
Still making our way west across the Pacific, the morning consisted of Zumba followed by a lecture on the American Deep South by one of the ship lecturers.

It was an interesting lecture. The person giving it had lived in Georgia for several years during his university days and then returned in a professional capacity. He was nice enough to give us a basic run down of the American Civil War and how it impacted on the region.

The remainder of the day was fairly lazy. As we're going to be turning towards the cold weather soon, some time is being spent out in the sunshine trying to soak up the warmth while it is still around.

As a special treat, for dinner our table headed to the Steakhouse to have dinner out on the balcony over looking the pool, while being serenaded by Pavarotti and then Cirque de Soleil. This was pleasant, except that because we were seated near the public stairs, people kept stopping and looking at us eat. It was little like we were in a zoo, a well catered zoo.

We had finished dinner in enough time to get to the final show for the ship’s current comedian – Glynn Nicholas. In the 1990s (I think), he appeared on a couple of TV shows and I think was fairly well known.

I don’t remember much of his work, but I do remember that I don’t think I really liked him. That said I would have been in primary school, so probably not in his target demographic.

Anyway there had been some chatter on the ship that perhaps his performance wasn’t really up to standard. Trying to keep an open mind, Mum and I went along to see what he was like. Being unsure if I would like it, I chose to sit at the back, while Mum sat at the front.

Regrettably for Glynn, his performance this evening was just poorly received as the previous shows. The whole time I’ve been on the ship, I never seen so many people get up and leave. I think about 50 people got up and left at various stages during the show. I’ve also never heard such scathing reviews from so many people.

Without wanting to be too harsh but still needing to get my point across – his show went for 45 minutes and I will never ever get those 45 minutes back. I’m sure root canal would have been less painful that watching the show.

The only reason I stayed for the whole show was that Mum was pulled up on stage to be one of his assistants for one of his skits, but even then my love for her and willingness to see her on stage was tested by the tedious nature of the actual skit. Called the Flea, this particular skit involved Glynn communicating with the audience and the people on stage through a kazoo, no words, just a plastic kazoo. The point of the skit was that the flea would ride his motorbike up one of Mum’s hairs, then do a back flip and land in the hands of a third passenger. I should also add that the skit went of for at least 10 minutes – that’s 10 minutes of no talking just communication via kazoo.

While Glynn left a lot to be desired, Mum was a star and put in an award winning performance. Unfortunately, due to copyright stuff, there is no photographic evidence of her performance, so it will just have to live on as an event that only those who stuck around for the whole show were able to witness. As a thank you for her hard work up on stage, she was paid with a lollipop.

After getting a late night drink, it was time to call it quits for the day, for tomorrow there is more land to be stepped on.

Fun fact:
Comedy (from the Greek: κωμῳδία, kōmōidía), in the contemporary meaning of the term, is any discourse or work generally intended to be humorous or to amuse by inducing laughter, especially in theatre, television, film and stand-up comedy.

I liked Glyn Nicholas on The Big Gig back in the day. It's been a long time between drinks since Susan was invited on stage by Norman Gunston soooo long ago so it's good she got another time to shine :-)
