Deniyaya, Sabaragamuwa Province, Sri Lanka
We are really going off the beaten track today as our destination is the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, home to a number of rare and threatened species.
The journey was quite an experience, narrow winding roads with barely any space for to vehicles to pass . Several towns had road works in progress which added to the experience!
Half way through the journey the road got so bad that Abey refused to take his car to the top and we had to transfer to a local driver who worked at the resort.
We passed through a village where a Festival parade was about to start, they stopped to let us through and all the children in their best clothes stood and waved at us. Lovely. We could see nothing of our destination until we were right on top of it, it was so well camouflaged in the trees.
The Rainforest Eco Lodge was very impressive main building with lots of individual accommodations set out to match the terrain. Despite the fact that they were all made from shipping containers they were well designed for comfort and had good facilities. We were very impressed with our accommodation and with the main building. Lunch was served and looked to be a very pleasant meal but unfortunately Mikey was not feeling very well so to the concern of the staff and the manager we left the restaurant. Mikey slept for the afternoon and I passed the time reading and relaxing.
By early evening he was feeling better and ready to try the dinning room again. It was lovely to see how concerned the staff were, the hotel manager even came to find us to see if he was better. That's what you call customer service! We had a really nice meal and Mikey was feeling better by the end of the day. It was a good thing that there was absolutely nothing to do here, it was an interesting experience but were did wonder why it was in our itinerary!!!
Still tomorrow we move on again.
