Robe, South Australia, Australia
Port Fairy to Robe.
Started the day exploring Port Fairy, it really is a very pretty little place . Walked down to the harbour and saw all the new holiday accommodations that are being build to develop their holiday trade. There are some seriously lovely properties in this area. Now I understand why the family who own our apartment from last night came to visit and fell for the property and stayed. It is all very tempting. Sadly funds don't run to a holiday property this visit!!
A stroll down the Main Street brought us to a nice little coffee shop where they even provide toys to play with and books to read. A fun time was had by all.
It was sadly time to say goodbye to Port Fairy and to 54on Bank as had rather a long journey ahead of us.
The road here are quite slow although they do run straight for long periods of time.
We stopped at a very attractive beach called Cape Bridgewater, where there were gullies and blow holes along the coast. The sea was a really deep blue cresting to almost green and frothing white. Instead of a sandy beach here there were strange shaped rocks and crags. There was also a 'petrified forest' - an old lava field. The whole thing was quite spectacular.
The journey continued, again passing through places with very English names.
We were a little disappointed at the lack of wild life to day: the seal colony was too far away for us to walk to in our limited time, while road signs kept promising kangaroos and koalas for 'x' number of kilometres but we did not see a single one. Not fair!!!
Eventually we arrived at our 'home' for tonight - Robe House. What a surprise, it was a really quaint little cottage with lovely high ceilings and the most amazing patch work quilts and four poster beds. Ever aspect as been well thought our to blend in with this age of the building. Apparently it was home of the government resident between 1847 and 1869 and was the first house built in Robe. It really has a charm and character all of its own. We instantly felt quite at home and I know we won't want to leave to morrow.
Robe is another quaint fishing/sailing holiday town: there are some seriously lovely buildings here both modern and older. There is a good sized harbour and a pleasant shopping area (although all the shops were shut and not due to open until after we leave tomorrow)! Still never mind the supermarket was open so we could have some tea.
