Monkey Mia, Western Australia, Australia
Leaving Kalbarri this morning we had planned to do some walking in the river gauge but sadly the rains have caused damage to the road system and the whole area is closed, some parts until July!!
So it was on the road again to see what was next on our route . Travelling North again we were heading for the area of Monkey Mia; a place with a reputation to surprise and please visitors.
The journey started off as we left off yesterday, low bush and scrub with low trees. Again there was the promise that there were animals wandering into the road at numerous intervals. We saw nothing!
Gradually the countryside became more like the bush we had driven through from Wave Rock, quite lush and dense vegetation. There was obvious evidence that there had been a bush fire during some part of the summer as there were many burnt plants.
The road ran straight for over a hundred kilometres and there was little traffic; a few campers making the same journey as us or returning from the north and of course the famous road trains, today much longer, 36.5 metres!
Morning tea was taken in a 24 hour stop over which was very pretty, quite well equips - toilets, picnic tables etc but very isolated!
This afternoon we visited Hamblins Pool to see a strange phenomenon known as stromatolites- living fossils that are growing in an area of high salt concentration. Quite a scientific wonder. Our next stop was to Shell Beach, which was a beach entirely made up of tiny shells and shell fragments. It was beautiful, so white against an amazing turquoise sea. Again a scientific phenomenon. So educational today.
Our 'home ' for tonight is the Monkey Mia Resort which seems quite pleasant, right on the beach. Great. Tomorrow we explore further.
One interesting fact, I drove the RV today for the first time!!
