THE CITY OF EDIPSOS

We are here in the north of Evia in "Edipsos" once again this year, visiting the capital Spa City of Greece, -a welcoming area rich in life, with vivid colours and aromas that gives the visitor serenity and mental clarity .

Edipsos is a famous tourist destination as many of you might already know but it becomes really crowded during the summer months since it is very popular. Personally I always try to visit it a little before the peak season. I love coming here especially in spring.

You see, it lies along the north western part of Evia where three big mountains dominate the landscape. It is a place with many natural paths leading to charming routes to fir forests and green clearings. (The mountains of Telethrion, Xiron Oros and Oros Kandili) ** oros means mount.

The beginning of the 20th century marks the Belle Epoque of the city due to the wide reputation and healing properties of the springs. It had become the popular attraction of multitudes many of whom were writers, artists, scientists or well known film stars.

Of course the history of Edipsos goes back from ancient times as far as mythology goes! According to mythology Hercules would bathe in the hot waters before each labour in order to relax and regain his strength .

Plutarch enthusiastically refers to the town's waters and the pleasure they offer. Stravonas also describes the thermal Spas of the city, mentioning their therapeutic properties with much admiration.

As we go around and throughout our stay I am kind of disappointed because I expected the city to be clean like years back. The park which is at a major spot of the city next to the most popular hotel of Edipsos is totally neglected and weedy. Locals are also disappointed and I wonder why the Mayor does not take the initiative and ask for volunteer work from the citizens if the problem is money. I am sure lots of locals will offer to help.

Something else that I did not like is that there is not a uniformity regarding buildings –of course it is too late now.

As I am writing this, I came up with an idea. I will personally get in touch with the Mayor and suggest that he asks for volunteer work to clear up the city from every litter as well as weed out and clean the park. If he does not respond it will show that he is unconcerned and indifferentist regarding the place.

The photos will surely give you an idea of what the city looks like!
COME ALONG.....

**A SPOT WE SHOULD VISIT NEXT TIME!

In antiquity there was the oracle of Selinountios Apollo. The history of the Monastery of Agios Georgios is very old and the relics that survived from the various barbarian invasions are very interesting, however we shall leave this visit for the coming trip which will be soon.
