THE VILLAGE OF PEFKI

Pefki is a popular summer resort and one of the little villages we visited today on this morning ride after our rich breakfast . It is located on the north western side of the island of Evia with more or less 300 residents.

Now in Greek the word 'pefki' means pines and I guess it has got the name from the numerous pine trees which are in the area.

In some spots pine trees extend as far as the coast. I have to admit that the resort prides for its beautiful sandy beaches. The water is clear and it is a paradise for beach holidays, nightlife (during the high season). I believe it meets the demands of many visitors.

Like in many other resorts the village has plenty of hotels, studios and guest houses for rent, restaurants and tavernas as well as several playgrounds for children.

I guess we have picked a bad timing for this visit where at least I expected to see restaurants open, people in the streets, children playing since schools are closed for the Easter holidays .

The picture we got was disappointing. Guests are expected in a couple of days for the Holy Week of Easter and what we see are elderly men mostly sitting out of ‘kafenia’ - coffee shops which remain open the year round for locals.

The village looks haunted….where has everybody gone?

Of course I would not have liked it crowded but I don’t like what I see this morning either! Something in between would do perfectly.

The result is that we make a U turn and drive off not bothering even to take many photos!

DISTANCE:

If you take the short-cut through Limni Chalkida it is about 107 kms.

I find the longer way much more beautiful though, the one passing through Prokopi, Limni, Rovies and Ilia to Edipsos.
