                           FLOODING IN EVIA

A state of emergency was declared in several areas in Evia prefecture today after flash floods caused by heavy rainfall early in the day in the area where I live .

The Civil Protection general secretariat declared a state of emergency for 14 districts. Fire Department and Civil Protection teams have been sent in to provide assistance to the flood-sticken, assisted by a team of frogmen with 7 life boats in the Lilantio region, while a latest weather report predicted continuation of the adverse weather for a further 6 hours.

A Super Puma all-weather helicopter airlifted airlifted a Swedish national in the Stomio district in Kymi municipality, while a 40-year old man was swept away by a torrent and drowned in the same area.

The police allowed us to pass through!

So we were allowed very late in the afternoon to pass through on our own risk . Finally we sent a friend of ours to check with our house, and we felt at ease when we were told that at least our house was ok.

In 2007 a fire destroyed the whole area where we live, and we just did not want to live the same experience again. We had been struggling 4 months to bring the house in the state we left it before the fire!

What we saw while passing through the flooded area was disaster.

Tons of mud had covered whole areas, cars drifted out in the sea, house equipment in the streets completely destroyed, people desperate not knowing how to save what remained inside their homes…..the colour of the sea in the brown colour of mud.

Be safe!
Good luck on making it home. I hope everything is still as you left it!
