The natural phenomenon of Katavothres, where large quantities of sea water flow into the ground from the area of Fanari at Argostoli and re-appear at the islands Eastern coast, at Karavomilos and the underground lake Melissani, is unique .

A part of the ceiling of the cave of Melissani lake, collapsed creating a unique spectacle when the sun's rays illuminate the 20.000 –year old stalactites on the rocky walls of the cave, and paint the lake waters with vivid colours.

The sightseeing tours in the interior of the lake is done by boat. The Cave of Drogarati, which has been estimated to be 150 million years old, with rare red stalagmites, stalactites and excellent acoustics, is by far the most impressive cave of all.
