SCALA – POROS



The route through the Valley of Crania is worth crossing . Going east the Castle of Saint George through beautiful sites with vineyards and olive trees groves, we arrive at Villages of Mousata, Vlachata and Lourdata,which has the island's best vegetables, and sublime, bow-shaped sandy beach.



Continuing along the road from Vlahada, we come across the Village of Simotata, where the historical Monastery of Panagia Ton Sision is situated. Bad luck for us, because we had no time to visit

.

Leaving the Village of Atsoupades and going along a bypass road to the right and through a wonderful green landscape, we will encounter the villages of Valeriano, Chionata, Theramona and Mavrata, to end up at Katelios, a picturesque village with fish taverns and a sublime view towards Zakynthos.

Further on, we reach Radzakli and the Cove of Mounda, with endless beaches covered by golden sand where the Caretta-Caretta sea turles nest .



Going on, we arrive at Scala, the most Southern village in Kefalonia and one of the island’s most frequently visited resorts with beautiful hotels, taverns serving fresh fish, shops and an endless sandy beach with limpid blue water.

From Scala, as the road goes on unwinding along the seaside, one meets virgin beaches.



Leaving Atsoupades, we can follow the coastal route, which is also the central road to the port of Poros. We will pass the village of Markopoulo, which is well-known around the world because of the unique phenomenon of small snakes marked with a small cross-shaped sign on their heads appearing crawling on the icon of (Philousa Panagia) – Kissing Virgin Mary- on the 15th of August every year. The road was quite narrow, and had no time to visit also, but these small snakes come out on the 15th of August anyway!



Next we will come across the villages of Kremmydi, Pastra, the centre of the district and Agia Irene . Passing Tzanata, where an impressive Mycenean tomb containing significant findings was found at the site of Borzi, we reach Poros.



POROS

Poros, an important port of the island, is also frequently visited seaside town combining mountain and sea with beautiful beaches and crystal clear blue-green waters.


After leaving Poros, traveling along a beautiful route to the town of Sami and passing partly through mountainous areas to the East of Aenos, and at times through green valleys, we will see the island’s oldest Monastery of Theotocos (God’s Mother) of Artos, with a unique view to Poros.



Further on, we reach Saint Nicolas, where at the end of the village we see the Lake Avythos or Megali Acoli whose waters irrigate the whole valley. The lake is so deep that it was believed to be bottomless .


Carrying on we pass Charakti with the old Church of the Archangels and the ruins of the ancient castle of Digaleto.

To our left, we come across the village of Tsakarisiano, where the ruins from the Castle of Sordatos, one of Pronni’s observation posts, are situated.


Further North, we meet the villages of Koulourata and, then Zervata, where we come to the other central road leading from Argostoli to Sami.
