SAMI – AGIA EFIMIA



Sami is a beautiful town built by the seafront at the feet of Agii Phanendes and Castro hills, upon which used to be the ancient city .



Sami one of the four major cities comprising the four-state Kefalonia, was well-known from Homer's epic poetry. When Homer referred to the island, he called it "Sami".   Sami remained known in history from its resistence to Romans. It is the second major port of Kefalonia connecting it with Italy and one of the most important touristic sea resorts.



The surrounding area contains springs with large quantities of fresh water flowing all year round, is densely-vegetated and presents many geological phonomena (underground lakes, caves and precipieces).



Apart from the Lake of Melissani and the cave of Drogarati, the famous caves of Zervati, Angalaki, and Chiridoni are worth visiting.



A road to the East of Sami leads to the beautiful beach of Antisamos, with its bright white pebbles embraced by crystal clear blue-green waters .



Another road will take us to a hill top, where the Abbey of Agrilion, dedicated to Hyperagia Theotocos (God’s Holy Mother) is situated Cosmas the Aetolian used to teach there. The Abey, dominates over the whole area.



Carrying on with our trip West of Sami, after we visited Karavomilos and the Lake Melissani and passing by small, beautiful beaches with pebbles and crystal clear waters, we reach Agia Efimia (Saint Euphemia).

It’s a picturesque quiet town sporting wide streets and good urban-planning, with a port where numerous yachts from all over the world flock in the summertime.
