Limassol, Cyprus

A Stroll Down Town:It is a great place to step back in time once in a while and I feel like visiting the Medieval Castle this day .I set off a little after my rich breakfast.

Entrance fee:

Personally I use my Press Pass, but the normal fee is €4.50 which I still think it is a bit much.

If you purchase the Day Pass it costs €8.50 and you can combine this visit with Kourion, Kolossi, and the Amathus ruins. This could be possible though only if you have a car.

The Castle:

It stands very proud in the historic city center and its purpose was to guard and protect both the port and the city itself .

An evocative series of displays chart the "political, economic, social and artistic development of Cyprus, as well as everyday life on the island, from the 3rd to the 19th Century AD." (This is from the museum brochure.) The museum does the job very well.

Historic Facts:

Richard the Lionheart celebrated his marriage to Berengaria of Navarre here in 1191, and crowned her Queen of England.

Throughout the years, the fort suffered damage from earthquakes and assaults of various invaders.

In 1590, the Ottomans rebuilt the fort in its current form, which today houses the Medieval Museum of Cyprus, exhibiting a collection from the era of 400 – 1870 AD.
