This beautiful village is just 15 km from Mount Olympus .

It is a very popular summer resort, but during winter is also popular with skiers, and people who come here to relax for the weekend and walk in the beautiful natural trails found in the area.

Kakopetria is divided into two parts; the original, medieval settlement which is situated on the east bank of the river Karkotis, and the modern resort with shops, cafes, banks and even a public swimming pool. The population is about 2.000.

Because of its good vegetation, Kakopetria is known for the good quality of fruit like, pears, apricots, peaches cherry trees, and especially the fine quality of its apples.

There are numerous ancient churches in the area, one of which is Agios Nicolas tis Stegis. The name of the village in Greek means "bad rock". Some say that in the past the area was full of rocks and it was difficult to come to it. However there was a custom in the old times that people that were about to get married used to dance around a big rock. However, an incident happened, and the rock fell on the groom and killed him, so they named that rock in the village as “bad rock”.
