Knoxville, Tennessee, United States
Trying to find a good campsite is a roll of the dice when you don't know the area or people. Yesterday we rolled crap. Yes, it was a campsite but it sure didn't live up to its advertising on the booklet we picked up at the Tennessee Welcome Center. It wasn't too difficult to find, but when I walked in to register, it wasn't anything like what was advertised. The owner, caretaker, chief cook and bottle washer and clerk took my $25 bucks and said take any spot down the hill. That's when things turned south. We backed into the best place we could find in the area he designated, and started setting up. The water spigot I wouldn't drink from if I were in the middle of the Sahara desert; the electricity did work but I checked it with a rechargeable led light we brought (not a computer or camera) and the advertised cable was a spider nest.
The weather was very good, high cirrus clouds and in the upper 60's After setting up we had our supper (remember I'm on a diet); we played cards, took Chi-Chi for a walk around the campground and turned in about 9 pm . Honestly, it was the best nights sleep I had had in days. We didn't get up this morning till 7! Very late for us. The 46 degree temperature actually felt pretty good - compared to the 30 degree wakeup temp the day before.
Taking our campsite down went well and we headed back to Knoxville and west on I-40.
Dolly said the best part of the campsite was the toilet paper (she said it wasn't like cardboard) and we did find some better sites down the hill next to a small lake that was the color of mud. A young man was sitting on a picnic bench next to the water and had a dog that discovered Chi Chi and wanted to get frisky. Needless to say, it turned into a fight with us in the middle.
Today the weather is cloudy and supposed to get into the 60's and we're on our way to Woodbury, TN to see a high school friend of Dolly's, Vicki Harris. Its only between 2 and 3 hours away. After that visit, we'll look for another campground with our eye on the weather.
