Windy Wednesday

Amarillo, Texas, United States
We packed up our campsite after a couple of days at Lake Texoma and headed west at about 8:30 am. We enjoyed Johnson Creek Campground, it only needed good water, wifi and cable access to be perfect.
Heading westward on US Route 70, we soon crossed the Oklahoma - Texas border and picked up Highway 287 which heads northwest toward Amarillo (our next planned destination) . We quickly began to notice the change from trees to grasslands and began to see some oil rigs. Susan Lawson had called Dolly and warned her of severe thunderstorms that were ahead of us and we kept an eye on the southwest horizon. Clouds kept building as we headed toward Amarillo and the winds increased dramatically. We must have been ahead of the storm as we only experienced spotty rain.
We arrived in Amarillo and stopped at a Texas State Welcome Center to gather some brochures because we plan to spend a couple of days here. Dolly noticed a big sign at the Welcome Center that warned of rattlesnakes and reminded us that this is their home - not ours and to be careful. Because the sustained winds were in the 40 mph range, we decided to get a motel (one motel a week is built into the budget) and selected a Days Inn on the eastern side of Amarillo. We dined at an IHOP next door to the motel.
Today, the winds are expected to subside about noon and we will seek out our campground for the next couple of days. We need to slow down a bit, we have over three weeks left until we arrive in Arcata/McKinleyville, CA for Katie's graduation. Our plan is to go to the Route 66 area, Cadillac Ranch and other sites of local interest.

Thanks for reading!
