Whoa...Slow Down !!!

Kingman, Arizona, United States
We looked carefully at the map, did some mileage calculations and realized that we MUST slow down. We've traveled 3,892.7 miles so far with somewhere in the neighborhood of 800 miles to go with 12 days to get to the Eureka/Arcata/McKinleyville area in California which is our first major stop. You may remember from the first post, Dolly's daughter Katie Emerson is graduating from Humboldt State University on May 17th and her birthday on May 18th. We can't arrive too soon as she will be dealing with finals, a Senior Project and will be too busy to deal with vagabond travelers from the east. Therefore, we decided to spend another day in Kingman.
Our visit to Kingman was planned to be - and was relaxing . We did almost nothing. Nearly no photos (sorry!), no discovering local haunts, just sitting our fat arses in lawn chairs at the campsite. At about 3pm, after giving the computer a workout on our next destination, I called the Nellis Air Force Base Family Camp and made reservations for two days. After giving the guy at the other end of the phone my life's history, receiving some cracks about being retired "Army" we're locked into a campsite with full hookups for a few pennies over 20 bucks. Bingo - that too was easy. We did make one journey into Kingman to replenish our food cache. After leaving the campground we headed toward the city and began looking for a super market. We found one relatively close by and found that its one of those stores where you must be a member to get prices on food that's reasonable. We left quickly and headed further into Kingman and found another major shopping area with a Safeway (sorry John - no Hy-Vee's here). We went inside and it too was a store that required a membership . A bit frustrated, I went up to the customer service counter and asked "what does it take to become a member?" The young lady reached under the counter, pulled out a trifold brochure, put a sticker on it with a series of numbers and said, "here, fill this out and bring it with you next time..or not." That was easy! We gathered our precooked roasted chicken, a can of beets, a couple tomatoes and a bag of ice and the checkout lady took our brochure with the numbered sticker, handed it back and after paying we were on our way. Full fledged members of the Safeway Grocery Company. Living in a small town with 2k+ people near the rugged shoreline of Midcoast Maine gives ample opportunity to learn the ways of the big city. And we did.
Next stop Hoover Dam and Vegas, the city that does not sleep. I hope we do.
