Cinco De Mayo in Bakersfield

Bakersfield, California, United States
Another day in Bakersfield, CA In order to slow down we decided to stay another day and relax. The weather, as I posted on Facebook, was absolutely perfect. Highs in the 70's, partly cloudy, light breeze. Honestly, our only accomplishment was going to the grocery store and picking up more vittles. The rest of the day was spent going through things, light repacking, FB and a few toddies in respect of Cinco De Mayo here in southern California where the latino presence is considerable. Cesar Chavez, a migrant worker activist in the 60's and 70's must have been from around here.
While at the grocery store, the RV park caretaker had turned on the sprinklers and some of our stuff got wet . We didn't think of that before we left, then later, they turned them on again while we were sitting here and although it took a few seconds to figure out what was going on, we quickly moved our stuff out of the way. Earlier, I had gone to the RV office to settle up when a RV park worker was using a high powered blower to remove dirt, leaves and other things from surrounding campsites. While he didn't do ours - Dolly was the recipient of several blasts and covered with high velocity dust and dirt - just after a shower. She wasn't happy.
This campground, is OK. While not perfect, it has full mature trees, water, electric, decent wifi and cable TV. Most of the other "campers" we learned stay here year-round. One gentleman who stopped by (with about a six inch gray/white goatee and no front teeth) said that he had been here seven years. Many must work in the local community and there are a few kids around. Everyone has been nice and easy to talk to.
A camper rolled in behind our site with South Dakota plates on the large RV and towed SUV . Because I lived in South Dakota for nearly 30 years, I went over and said hi and we had a nice visit. They were from Madison, and before that Huron, SD and we had several common friends. When you see South Dakota license plates on recreational vehicles, it doesn't necessarily mean they are "from" South Dakota because the RV community has discovered that if you join a "club" and spend at least one night in South Dakota, you can obtain residency and register your vehicles and take advantage of ultra cheap registration and no vehicle inspection requirement - plus South Dakota is a state that doesn't have a state income tax - but most are retired and aren't working anyway.
The only other thing of note is related to wildlife. While we were sitting around the campsite, Dolly spotted a pair of hummingbirds across the street that were, let's just say "mixing up some baby batter." It was interesting to see this avian couple, locked in sexual bliss, while flying up, down forwards and backwards only a few feet away. It happened within about 10 seconds while my (and Dolly's) cameras were out of reach. Damn! The shot of a lifetime right before our eyes and we missed it.
The "Greezwald" saga continues. (A variation of The Griswald's from Chevy Chase's classic movie "Vacation".)
