The San Joaquin Valley

Madera, California, United States
Just as we were finishing up our morning coffee and light breakfast we began to notice some raindrops had began to fall. It took us about 10 minutes to pack up, drop the campground bathroom key at the office, pick up a bag of ice and head out. We enjoyed our two-day stay in Bakersfield. After stopping for fuel, we were on our way north on Highway 99. Actually its a divided four-lane road in very good condition. We drove in and out of very light rain and, because we weren't in any big hurry, we made a couple of quick stops through some small towns. Obviously, these small towns were home to the latino community who work the fields, orchards and groves. No doubt they work very hard for little money and their communities are a reflection of their income.
We began seeing roadside signs of a roadside attraction ahead called "Bravo Farms" and decided to take it in . It was rather interesting in that it had large displays of locally produced food products such as a variety of different kinds of cheese, with samples, fruit, nuts, and the normal run of tourist oriented items. Outside, a vendor that was cooking BBQ on a large barrel-type blackened cooker. It smelled awesome, we were famished and each had a sandwich. I had beef, Dolly, chicken. They really hit the spot.
Because of the occasional rain and temps only in the upper 50's we decided to get a motel and wash some of the accumulated road grime off in a motel shower. Don't get me wrong, the campground showers are OK, but not as good as in a motel. And a lot less crowded. I had some accumulated reward points from previous travels and decided to use some of these. Chi Chi must have agreed because when we entered the room, she jumped up on a bed and ran around, jumped to the other bed and did another series of quick circles. She was happy!
After several phone calls back and forth, it looks like we're going to arrive in the Eureka/Arcata and McKinleyville area a few days before we planned. Evidently, Dolly's offer to make breakfast, prepare some of Katie's favorite meals and I was volunteered to do some cleaning was enough for us to arrive a few days early. We're still going to be as scarce as possible as Katie will be finishing up her classwork, presenting her senior Wildlife and Conservation major project, and, of course taking her finals. That sounded good to us!
