Napa Valley

Cloverdale, California, United States
We decided to pack up a day early and depart Travis Air Force Base and head further north. Although we had intended to stay two days, we had seen Karen Kaboskie and experienced the area to our satisfaction. And, we got a refund for the day we didn't use.
We headed toward Interstate 80 and found our turnoff toward northern central California . I must admit, California is a beautiful state. I can understand why it is the most populous state in the nation - and we skirted the big cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco, which also helped.
We decided on a backroad as we went north on Highway 29 through the famous Napa Valley. As we headed into the small town of Napa, I was surprised there weren't more grape fields. It wasn't long, though, when we continued to drive north into the valley with miles and miles of grape fields. We stopped at a couple places and took in the sights and made a few photos. (You see or photograph one grape field, you've seen or photographed them all). In the heart of the Valley, the big name grape producers have huge estates with lavish facilities inviting high end winos to stop by and sample their wares. And, I'm not kidding about the high end. We stopped at one place that said "by appointment only" (which the Greezwald's hadn't made) and found a group of people slobbering over glasses of wine with white table cloths and waiters/waitresses who looked like formal French butlers . Obviously not our kind of place. So, we sneaked out the door we came in and back to our pickup and back toward highway 29. We did stop at another place, although again very expensive looking and they were quite nice and helpful. We were offered a taste of five "wines of the day" for only $25; but we politely declined. All of their wines were dry white wines, not my or Dolly's favorite, we like sweet and red. And cheap.
As we continued north, we crawled at a snails pace through several small towns. Evidently the stop signs in these small towns and large amount of traffic back up worse than Red's Eats in Wiscasset, Maine on Route 1 during the busy summer tourist season.
Dolly found a KOA just off of Route 101 in Cloverdale and we headed there. To get to this KOA, we followed the signs on local backroads and wound around and up hills on a very narrow asphalt road. It was so far off the beaten path that I joked to Dolly that this might be one of those clothing optional California swinger hangouts. Luckily it wasn't and we registered and set up for the night. This was the most expensive campground so far at $55 a night, but they have a "deal" two-fer where if you stay Friday night, Saturday night is also free. That makes it reasonable.
Thanks for reading and viewing, look for another post tomorrow on The Greezwald's adventure to California. We are only about 200 miles from our first major destination - Eureka/Arcata/McKinleyville, California.

 Love ya,

 Cheers,

Jan, Dolly and Chi Chi
