Our Halfway Point!!!

McKinleyville, California, United States
After 5,074.8 miles, we finally reached our midpoint destination of McKinleyville, California. What a lovely sight to see! OK, let me backup a bit and start at the beginning of the day. We got up fairly early - 6ish - made our usual couple of cups of good strong French Roast coffee, and worked on the blog for the day. Just before downloading photos, something happened and I was off the internet and not able to get it reconnected. Disappointed, I (we) packed up and headed back to the main road (Highway 101).
Highway 101 is a secondary artery through northern California . Interstate 5 is the primary. Our intended destination required us to take 101 for about 200 miles as I-5 is much further west. US Highway 101 follows a hilly path, often winding serpentine (thanks Randi) style through the absolutely beautiful countryside. The panorama before you is superbly stunning which makes this part of the trip a pleasure. As we topped a hill in one part of the drive, a motorist was in the middle of the highway waiving a flare to get people to slow down from both directions. As we passed a stopped car in the roadway, we saw the reason, the car had hit a mature doe. The deer had died, but all of the people in the car that struck the deer were OK - and it didn't look like too much damage to their vehicle.
A bit further, we entered Redwood Country. We stopped at a roadside rest stop and took a break from driving and along a short walking path were numerous huge redwood trees. My first close up and personal view of these majestic giants. We had passed large numbers of tree hauling semi trucks with extremely large red/brown straight tree trunks . A while later we again stopped at a roadside shop that featured anything you could imagine made from redwood. Even redwood shot glasses, but, for $15, I thought was a bit too spendy.
In another hour we hit the outskirts of Eureka, stayed on the 101 and into Arcata. We saw the university on the right where Katie had attended and will graduate at the next to last exit, then another few miles to McKinleyville, our destination. We programmed her address into Bertha, the sometimes helpful GPS, checked out her place (drive by) then went to a campground about a mile away.
The White Widow RV Park is the closest RV park to Katie's place and had checked it out on-line. The reviews, for the most part, were not flattering, but we're only there for a couple of days and that would just be to sleep overnight. We got checked in and the old codger manager (who had been described as "mean" and "nasty") lived up to his on-line reputation. I found it rather humorous and we got along great. I gave him shit and he did the same to me . We then went to the designated area, in the RV park, picked out a site (we were the only people there) parked the truck off loaded a few things and waited for Katie's call. Shortly, Dolly had another nature call so we walked to the bathhouse and I searched for internet signals while Dolly checked out the facilities. Just as Dolly was coming out, up pulled a 1999 black Chevy Cavalier driven by who else - her daughter, Katie!  "Oh, my baby" Dolly cried out and she ran to grab Katie then hugged for a few minutes. Their meeting in person after over a year was just as Dolly hoped - memorable!
We then headed to Katie's place, let the dogs get acquainted and went inside to relax and let the girls catch up on college, life in general and family stuff. Soon, Katie's roommate Luke, got home from work, and after introductions and some small talk went out to dinner at a nearby Denny's. Yeah, we only go to the best places!
I had to make an ice run and took it back to the campground to restock the cooler and by the time I got back, Dolly had worked her magic with my computer and got it working. Evidently I had misunderstood a "Y" for a "4" and had screwed up the password at Katie's place. Then I was able to send out the blog from the day before (the reason why it was so late). At about 8 or so, we headed back to the campground and settled in for the night.
 What a day!
All for now, thanks for reading and viewing. A banner at the top of the Travelpod site said it was going to be offline for maintenance tomorrow, so look for the next blog when you see it.
 Cheers!
  Jan, Dolly and Chi Chi.
